Pregnancy Chiropractic
Are you looking for pregnancy pain relief ? Pregnancy can be a wonderful, exciting time but for some, it can also bring discomfort as the body adjusts to a changing posture and weight distribution. For others the extra physical challenges of pregnancy may mean that old injuries re-emerge. There are a few pregnancy related conditions which would contra-indicate chiropractic treatment, but these are rare. As a rule it is my personal preference to delay the start of chiropractic treatment until the 12 week mark if you have not experienced chiropractic before, not because there is any evidence that it could be detrimental prior to this point, but more to err on the side of absolute caution. If however, you are in significant pain please do call me so that we can discuss your options. I have undergone additional training covering treatment during pregnancy including seminars with Gail Tully of Spinning Babies, The Pelvic Partnership (a great resource for mamas experiencing PGP, pelvic girdle pain), Liz Koch, Jeanne Ohm (Webster technique) and Elisabeth Davidson to name a few.
All these techniques are very gentle and perfectly safe and comfortable to receive during pregnancy with the aim of relieving structural restrictions in muscles, ligaments and the pelvis to reduce pain, sciatica, pelvic girdle pain and that annoying niggle in your upper back when you bend from this area as your bump begins to restrict bending from the waist. Webster technique was developed by chiropractor Dr Larry Webster when looking for ways to help remove the influence of a mother’s physical restrictions to a baby’s innate ability to move from a breech position to head down in readiness for birth. When your bump begins to make lying on your tummy uncomfortable I have a specially designed pregnancy treatment cushion to support you in all the right places whilst treatment is carried out.
Post birth attentions often shift, rightly so, to the needs of the new baby, but mum still needs consideration too. Life with a newborn can look very different when it comes to the day to day physical demands on your body. Many new mums will adopt a multitude of odd positions for extended periods of time when attempting to get breastfeeding established and whether breast or bottle feeding mums can develop all sorts of aches and pains in the upper back, neck and shoulders when supporting their growing little ones during extended feeding sessions. That’s before we even mention all the lugging around of bulging changing bags, hoisting prams in and out of the car boots and the twisted postures adopted when making sure that your precious little one is safely fixed into their car seat. You may, unsurprisingly, begin to notice little niggles that were never there before. That’s where very often chiropractic can make a useful contribution to your post partum care. Having two children of my own with very different pregnancies and births I can appreciate how each and every pregnancy and birth experience is unique and can influence heavily how you cope with the post partum period physically, mentally and emotionally.
I love to work with new and expectant mums and help them get the most out of life with their growing family. If you are suffering, don’t wait, give me a call. I can’t wait to meet you!
